Yoga Teachers
Over the years, some of the world’s most respected yoga teachers have chosen Ulpotha as their home-from-home, sharing knowledge and practice with you in the most natural way.
Michael Barnes
Yoga TeacherMick is a 1,000 hour teacher based in Sydney. He holds a 200 hour Samadhi, 300 hour Jivamukti, is a 500 hour Jivamukti mentor and an Advanced Certified Jivamukti teacher. He is registered with Yoga Australia and Yoga Alliance.
Twenty years ago, yoga found Mick when he least expected it. After years of pushing his limits, chronic pain had set in and his body had seized. A chance agreement with a remedial therapist took him to three classes a week. At first he disliked it. It hurt, he felt inflexible and out of place. He kept showing up. Around a year in, something shifted. The practice not only began to free his body, it offered a clear way to live with more ease and to step out of the grip of thoughts and emotions. Gratitude took root and commitment followed.
Mick went on to study the eight-limb path with teachers including Sharon Gannon, David Life, Greger Maehle, David Garrigues and Anja Kuehnel. With more than a thousand hours of training, he has learned how to bring traditional methods into modern life in a way that feels inclusive and safe for every body.
For the past 18 years, he has owned and run The Yoga Factory in Sydney, teaching daily classes and training new teachers. His style is clear, grounded and down to earth. He meets you where you are, and helps you build strength, focus and trust in your own practice.
At Ulpotha, Mick shares deep knowledge of the body along with practical yogic wisdom. Morning classes build solid foundations with bandha, drishti and breath. Over the weeks you will progress at your pace, with variations for all levels. Afternoon sessions include steady asana, kriyas, pranayama and simple meditation. Expect to finish each day calm, clear and quietly stronger.
You will leave Ulpotha rested, relaxed, resilient and with a much deeper understanding of yoga.
What you will experience with Mick:
- Clear instruction that makes practice feel accessible
- Strong foundations in bandha, drishti and breath
- Inclusive options for every level and body
- Kriyas, pranayama and meditation to steady the mind.
James De Maria
Yoga TeacherOne of Ibiza’s most respected teachers, James has been guiding adults and children for more than 20 years. His classes feel fluid and grounded, with a quiet confidence that comes from long experience.
James trained as a professional dancer at the Central School of Ballet and completed his diploma at London Contemporary Dance School. He deepened his understanding of Release Technique with the Siobhan Davies Dance Company under Larron Potter, Gill Clarke and Paul Douglas, and studied Pilates with Alan Herdman. That movement lineage sits at the heart of how he teaches today.
Drawing on dance, Pilates and Release Technique, James breaks down the space between posture, breath and movement so practice becomes a continuous, easeful flow. Sessions include pranayama, mudra, relaxation and simple meditation. You’ll be guided to work to your ability, build strength and mobility, and leave feeling clear and steady.
What you’ll experience with James:
- Breath-led sequences with smooth, intelligent transitions
- Gentle alignment cues from a dancer’s eye
- Pilates-informed core work for stability
- Pranayama, mudra and restorative rest to close.
Rob Hess
Yoga TeacherRob is one of California’s most experienced and joy-filled teachers of Prana Flow. His classes move in gentle, rhythmic waves with deep, satisfying asana and plenty of time for restorative, therapeutic and meditative practice. Everything is centred around the heart.
Rob’s path began with the physical side of yoga. Years of steady study shifted that focus inward, and it’s the spiritual nourishment of practice that now guides his teaching. He found his home in the Prana Flow community with his teacher, Shiva Rea, and has assisted her in workshops and trainings across the U.S.
Rooted in Prana Flow, Rob’s approach draws from classical yoga, Bhakti, Tantra and Ayurveda to reveal yoga as a living, breathing flow of awareness. Expect warmth, playfulness and clear guidance. He invites you to enjoy the journey rather than rush the destination.
Rob has taught from Cleveland to Washington, D.C., and now calls Ventura home, where he co-owns Jai Rhythm with his business partner, Colin Brightfield. Wherever he teaches, he’s most inspired by the same thing: the way yoga builds real community and opens the heart.
Through his own daily sadhana, Rob knows how practice can free the body and mind from the limits we place on ourselves. His aim is simple and personal: to help you connect with your own truth, and to live from it with confidence.
What you’ll experience with Rob:
- Fluid sequences that build quietly and land deeply
- Restorative and therapeutic elements woven into every session
- Breath, meditation and heart-centred intention
- An inclusive space where you can practise at your own pace, whether you’re new to yoga or well along the path.

Philippa Asher
Yoga TeacherFrom London, Philippa is one of the very few Ashtanga practitioners worldwide and the only British woman to be certified by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois to teach the method in his tradition. She learned the Primary, Intermediate, Advanced A and Advanced B series directly with Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois at the Krishna Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore. Today she shares the system internationally in studios, on retreats and online with Sanskrit-counted led classes and one-to-ones.
A vocational ballet training from the age of twelve led to twenty-five years studying and teaching dance at universities and companies across the UK. A chance Ashtanga class in London changed everything. From the late 1990s, Philippa practised daily before work in film, media and music, returning to Mysore for several months each year to study with her teachers.
In 2006 she established and ran Triyoga Soho’s Ashtanga self-practice programme, teaching there for five years before moving to South India to build her own shala, ASHTANGA NIRVRTA, on a coffee estate in the Western Ghats. Alongside Mysore-style guided self-practice and led classes at her shala, she leads workshops and residencies across London, Europe and the Middle East, plus retreats worldwide. When she is not in the studio, Philippa teaches online one-to-ones, Sanskrit-counted Primary, Intermediate and Advanced A, and pranayama.
Expect clarity, precision and warmth. Philippa teaches the method as it was given to her - steady, attentive and rooted in breath so you can practise safely, refine technique and feel progress that is both grounded and sustainable.
What you’ll experience with Philippa:
- Traditional Mysore-style guided self-practice
- Sanskrit-counted led classes with clear pacing
- Practical adjustments and technique for all levels
- Breath-centred focus, simple pranayama and quiet rest
- New to Advanced B Series Ashtanga yoga practitioners welcome

After a vocational ballet school training from age twelve and twenty-five years of studying and teaching dance at universities and ballet companies all over the UK, Philippa randomly walked into an Ashtanga yoga class in London. It was a life-changing incident, that made complete sense.
From the late 1990s, she began learning/practising the Ashtanga yoga system, daily before work (in the media, film, and music industries). For over twenty years she has studied for several months each year at KPJAYI (now called Sharath Yoga Centre) in Mysore and on tour, practising under the guidance of guru Pattabhi Jois and his grandson Sharath Jois.
In 2006, Philippa established and ran Triyoga Soho’s Ashtanga self-practice programme in London. She taught there for five years before relocating to South India, to build her own shala (on a coffee estate in the Western Ghats).
As well as teaching Mysore-style Ashtanga guided self-practice, led classes and workshops at ASHTANGA NIRVRTA, Philippa also leads workshops and self-practice residencies at studios in London, Europe, Middle East and on retreats worldwide. When not in the studio, she teaches Online One-to-Ones and Sanskrit Counted Primary, Intermediate and Advanced A Series classes and pranayama.
Her approach to sharing yoga asana (from beginners to more seasoned practitioners) is serious, yet light-hearted and joyful. Her emphasis is on good technique, safe alignment, the synchronisation of vinyasa (Sanskrit-counted, coordinated moving/breathing sequences) with tristhana (alignment of breath, gaze points and movement), passing on the exact method as taught by Pattabhi Jois from the late 1990s and embracing the essence of Patanjali’s sutras on yoga and asana.
Philippa’s dedicated passion for Ashtanga yoga, background as a trained dancer and experience as a qualified teacher (Post Graduate Certificate in the Education of Adults), gives her an intuitive and sound understanding of bodies, yoga asanas, people and how they learn. For more information, please visit www.ashtangaphilippa.com
In Ulpotha for this retreat, Philippa will be offering:
- Daily Ashtanga guided self-practice
- Sanskrit-Counted Primary Series
- Afternoon workshops on asana technique, concepts of the method, body opening, pranayama, meditation, philosophy, Q&A etc
- New to Advanced B Series Ashtanga yoga practitioners welcome
Mika de Brito
Yoga TeacherMika is France-based and has been teaching for more than 25 years. His approach is rooted in tradition and alive to the present. He began with Ashtanga under Baptiste Marceau, then spent years in the Himalayas with a Hindu swami, including time in a cave in Gangotri where meditation took centre stage. Later, he was invited by Sharon Gannon to study Jivamukti in New York. These threads, plus decades of travel and practice, shape how he teaches today. His classes ask you to work with focus and also to enjoy yourself. Mika encourages a kind practice that softens old habits and builds a better relationship with yourself, with others and with the world. When he is not teaching, he is making music or writing, and that creative energy comes into the room as soon as class begins. Vinyasa Krama with Mika Dynamic and open to all levels. You will move through the elements as a simple ritual: Air: breathing practices set to a steady beat to clear the mind and wake the body Fire: sun salutations to build heat Water: sweat to release what you do not need Earth: grounding asana to steady and stabilise Ether: quiet arrives and meditation closes the practice Expect clear rhythm, thoughtful sequencing and space to explore at your own pace. What you will experience with Mika: Breath led flow with musical timing Strong yet playful sequences with options for every body Practical philosophy you can use off the mat

Traditionally trained, ie in following a master yogi, Mika was first initiated by Baptiste Marceau (son of the famous French mime artist) to the art of Ashtanga (a dynamic form of yoga originally called Korunta). This led him to follow the path of a Hindu Swami yogi for several years in the Himalayas, even dwelling in a cave in Gangotree in order to gain insight into a more traditional and meditative style. Later on he was invited by Sharon Gannon to follow the Jivamukti teachings in New York. These teachings and many yogic travels and study led him to develop his own very particular style.
Vinyasa Krama with Mika de Brito
(Dynamic practice open to all levels)
We begin with breathing exercises on a metronomic sound in order to bring AIR into the body, then we slowly light the FIRE with sun salutations and the fire purifies the body by eliminating toxins through the WATER of sweat. These three éléments stabilise with contact to the EARTH, the asanas, the ground. Once all of these elements are united, then the fifth element ETHER can make its appearance through Meditation.
Connected to the present, open to the world around him and highly creative, Mika has brought this ancient tradition to his many students around the world. His demanding and yet playful approach has brought new life into the yogic discipline. He wants students to rid their minds of modern conditioning and adopt a liberating and compassionate practice, what he calls “being spiritual”, the fundamentals of which are to cultivate a good relationship with oneself, others and the world about us.
He lives in France and shares his time between performing music, writing and teaching yoga in retreats and workshops around the world.

Olivia Clarke
Yoga TeacherInsight Yoga is a rich intersection of Yin and Yang styles of Yoga, informed by Buddhist Mindfulness and Psychology. Olivia is a long-term student of Sarah and Ty Powers and a deep Dharma Practitioner. Her passion is sharing Buddha Dharma in practical ways and connecting people, as much as possible, to the natural world. "Thousands of tired, nerve shaken, over-civilised people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; wildness is a necessity”. (John Muir 1901) "We are part of the Earth, and it is part of us. We love this Earth as a newborn loves its mother's heartbeat." (Chief Seattle 1854). The tragedy is that so many have lost this deep and essential connection. For this reason, Olivia is thrilled to be invited to teach at Ulpotha. Each session will be an invitation to slow down and dive deep into Buddhist Mindfulness, as a Path of Awakening. Olivia's teaching is meditational and strengthening, as well as grounding and restorative. Inclusivity is at the heart of her teaching style. She has been teaching since 1998 and is able to meet diversity and a wide range of ability within a single class. For the past three years, she has taught at Masters Events: Oxford, the largest trauma and wellbeing conference in Europe. Here, she weaves together psychological training such as IFS with yoga teaching, every year deepening further her understanding of trauma. In her retreat you will be encouraged to attune to the inner landscape of body, heart, mind, and to track your own territory with sensitivity and care. The mood of Maitri, Loving Awareness, infuses the relational territory that we build with ourselves, each other and the environment.

Originally trained in Healing Shiatsu, TCM, Five Elements and Meridian Theory, Olivia offers Yin Yoga Teacher Training, Private Retreats at The Coach House and Silent Retreats, at a larger venue, in Wales UK, where she lives.
A lover of wild landscapes, horses and animals, she has spent time on American Indian Reservations and has a deep respect for indigenous cultures. The Earth is our medicine. It is Home. Our heart-minds need the wild. She trained in Earth Healing and often weaves the Five Elements of Chinese Medicine into her teaching style.
Masi Fraysse
Yoga TeacherMasi’s name comes from Mahsima, “face of the moon” in Persian. Born in London to Iranian and French/Swedish parents, she now lives and teaches in Ibiza. Her childhood was steeped in poetry and mysticism, often falling asleep to the words of Rumi. That love of the sacred thread runs through every class she teaches. Masi began practising yoga with her family and committed fully at 20. Time in Sivananda ashrams across India rooted her in traditional Hatha and Bhakti, with a strong foundation in philosophy and devotional practice. She left a career in design over a decade ago and studied with Angela Farmer, Mark Whitwell and Bex Tyrer, completing a traditional apprenticeship in Bali. The first years of teaching were fiery and expansive. A serious back injury then asked for a new way. Working through nerve pain led her into deep somatic healing and emotional work. Her teaching reshaped around trauma-informed principles, Yin, and a clear respect for the body’s wisdom. Modalities such as Integrative Quantum Medicine and The Emotion Code helped her explore the emotional intelligence of the organs, which now sits at the heart of her work. At Ulpotha, mornings are Masi’s signature Hatha Flow. Expect breathwork, mantra, mudra and dynamic movement that feels grounded and alive. Afternoons slow right down with Yin Yoga and Somatic Enquiry, including gentle myofascial release with tennis balls. Classes are inclusive and adaptive so you can practise safely, feel supported and leave steady, nourished and connected. Masi is currently studying Gabor Maté’s Compassionate Inquiry, bringing fresh depth to her therapeutic approach. Her intention is simple: to hold a loving space where you can unwind, recalibrate and touch a quiet inner refuge that is always there. What you’ll experience with Masi: Morning Hatha Flow woven with pranayama, mantra and mudra Afternoon Yin and Somatic Enquiry with simple myofascial release Trauma-informed guidance and clear options for everybody A calm, devotional atmosphere that invites trust and ease.

Shirin Akbar
Yoga TeacherShirin discovered yoga fifteen years ago, just after her son was born. Until then she was a polo player living life at pace, but a few twists and turns nudged her towards a quieter way of being. The shift brought what she needed most—balance, ease and a steady kind of joy that has guided her ever since. Swiss and Pakistani by heritage, she has lived in England, Switzerland, Dubai, India and Pakistan, and has called Sri Lanka home since 2017. A solo parent, her daughter is in Colombo and her son lives with her while he studies. She speaks French, English, German, Urdu/Hindi and Sinhala. Her practice and teaching are rooted in classical training that includes Ayurveda. She studied at Yogadarshanam in Mysore with Yogacharya Santhosh Kumar and deepened her understanding of functional movement through Yoga Anatomy with Stu Girling. Ongoing self-practice and continued education—both contact and non-contact—keep her work evolving and grounded in lived experience. Shirin’s classes are inspired by Hatha and Vinyasa: creative, breath-centred and thoughtfully aligned, with plenty of options to modify so you can meet yourself where you are. She aims to instil confidence and quiet fearlessness, so that body and mind can move through life with acceptance and ease; you step off the mat feeling energised, nourished and relaxed. Pattabhi Jois and continues to study with Sharath Jois. Claire practises the Primary, Intermediate and Advanced A series and has the blessing of KPJAYI to teach both Primary and the full Intermediate series. While in Mysore she apprenticed with Sharath in both his morning Western classes and his afternoon Indian classes. She leads Mysore self-practice, led classes and workshops, and teaches on retreats across Europe, India and Australia. Her approach balances strength with tenderness. She understands how asana works in the body and relates it to the emotional, mental and devotional layers of practice. Claire is also a musician with a love for the bansuri, the Indian bamboo flute, and often brings sound and song into her teaching. Away from the shala she is mum to her daughter, Ananda. She holds a BA in International Relations, an MA in Linguistics from the University of Sydney and a Postgraduate qualification in English Language Teaching from Cambridge University. She taught at university for more than a decade, which shows in her clear, encouraging teaching style. Mornings are Ashtanga-based and open to all levels, from complete beginners to long-time practitioners. Claire will guide you individually so the practice meets you where you are. Afternoons slow down with pranayama, sound healing through Sanskrit singing and bansuri, gentle philosophy and storytelling from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, with simple reflections for modern life. What you will experience with Claire Traditional Mysore-inspired practice with personal guidance Clear technique that feels strong, steady and kind Pranayama, mantra and restorative time to settle the nervous system Music and myth that bring philosophy to life

Claire Saunders is a dedicated student of the traditional Ashtanga Yoga method. She has travelled to India almost yearly since 1999 to study yoga, Indian music (with a focus on the bansuri – the Indian bamboo flute), Ayurveda, mantra, meditation, and Vedic philosophy. Claire was a direct student of Pattabhi Jois and now continues to study with his grandson Sharath Jois. She practices Primary, Intermediate and Advanced A series Ashtanga Yoga asanas and has the blessing of the KPJAYI to teach both the Primary and full Intermediate Series. While in Mysore, Claire has also been an apprentice to Sharath with both his morning Western classes and his afternoon Indian classes. In addition to her Ashtanga yoga studies, Claire has spent many years under the direct guidance of Swami Niranjanananda and his teachers learning Bhakti yoga (Yoga from the heart).
As well as teaching Mysore-style Ashtanga guided self-practice, led classes and workshops, Claire also leads guest workshops and retreats at studios throughout Europe, India, and Australia. Her approach to sharing yoga asana (from beginners to more seasoned practitioners), is one that contains a balance of both strength and gentleness. She has a deep awareness of the biological function of the asana (yoga postures) and at the same time she can relate the physical to the emotional, mental, and devotional elements of this rich yoga practice.
Claire is Australian born, and established the Ashtanga Yoga Shala Provence in the south of France in 2012 where she teaches in both French and English to a mix of local students and international visitors.
She balances her passion for Ashtanga Yoga to being a mum to her young daughter Ananda. Claire holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations, a master’s degree in Linguistics from the University of Sydney, Australia, and a Post Graduate qualification in English Language Teaching from Cambridge University, England. She also worked for over a decade as a University Professor. While at Ulpotha, Claire will be teaching a morning asana class (ashtanga based – but open to all levels of students – from complete beginners to more seasoned practitioners. Claire will guide each student individually according to their unique level and needs). Afternoon sessions will be dedicated to rest, relaxation and rejuvenation with a mix of pranayama (breathing techniques), sound healing (Sanskrit singing and bansuri playing), philosophy discussions and storytelling from the great epics of the Mahabharat and the Ramayana and their relevance to a modern, western lifestyle.
Molly Harragin
Yoga TeacherMolly is a Jivamukti teacher and yoga therapist from the UK. She teaches across London studios, works one to one with private clients and leads retreats and festival classes worldwide. She is also training as a psychotherapist. She discovered yoga in Bali in 2007 and went on to study in India, Australia and the UK. After exploring Ashtanga, Sivananda and more playful practices, she chose Jivamukti for its clear link between what happens on the mat and how we live day to day. After teacher training she completed a year-long apprenticeship with Cat Alip-Douglas, founder of Jivamukti London. Drawn to a more holistic path, Molly qualified as a Yoga Therapist with a degree from Yogacampus. Yoga therapy meets the individual where they are and uses yoga to support health conditions, injuries and symptoms with the aim of steady self-healing. Today Molly blends both worlds. Her teaching may include meditation, pranayama, chakra work, philosophy, vinyasa, hands-on assists, partner work, Yoga Nidra and EFT. Alignment and breath sit at the centre of every class. She welcomes complete beginners and long-time practitioners alike. Mornings begin with an energising flow to set your day up. Expect a creative sequence, a simple philosophical theme, chanting, meditation and breathwork. Evenings slow down with a more therapeutic, breath-led practice that prepares you for deep rest and Yoga Nidra. What you will experience with Molly: Jivamukti-inspired flows with clear alignment Practical philosophy, mantra and meditation Breathwork, EFT and gentle therapeutic tools Evening sessions that restore and settle the nervous system

Having discovered yoga in Bali in 2007, Molly went on to further her yoga studies through intensive trainings in India, Australia & the UK. After practicing various styles including Ashtanga, Sivananda, and even laughing yoga, she specialised in Jivamukti Yoga being attracted to a system that seamlessly translates the ancient yogic teachings into our modern-day settings. She loved the way Jivamukti yoga made a constant correlation between the yoga practice and life off the mat and helped her teach the yoga practice as a way of transforming health, cultivating mindfulness, and reconnecting us back to our planet and to one another. After her teacher training in the UK she embarked upon a year-long apprenticeship under the infamous Cat Alip-Douglas, founder of Jivamukti London.
After a few years of teaching, traveling and practicing, Molly found herself drawn to the more holistic side of yoga and became a certified Yoga Therapist with a degree from Yogacampus in London. Yoga Therapy is a way of tailoring yoga to the individual and uses yoga to help with medical conditions, symptoms, or injuries with the ultimate aim of self-healing. It brings the ancient system of yoga into a therapeutical setting where the individual is met as a multi-layered being.
Molly's yoga now combines these two complementary yogic and therapeutic methods in a well-rounded practice which includes meditation, pranayama, chakra balancing, philosophy, vinyasa, hands-on adjustments, partner yoga, yoga nidra, and EFT. A special focus is placed on alignment and breathwork in Molly's classes.
At Ulpotha Molly will begin the morning with an energizing flow yoga class to invigorate and inspire your day. Classes include a creative sequence based on a particular philosophical theme, chanting, meditation and pranayama. In the evening Molly will offer a more explorative breath-focused approach that incorporates the principles of yoga therapy and prepares the practitioner for a deep soothing session of relaxation and yoga nidra.
Molly is used to teaching complete beginners and advanced yogis alike and welcomes all levels to join the retreat.
Lisa Garratt
Yoga TeacherOriginally from San Diego, Lisa teaches and offers bodywork in Santa Cruz and across the Bay Area in California. Yoga has been part of her life since childhood. She remembers the simple happiness of those early classes, the relief of using breath to ease running cramps as a teenager and, later, how practice supported sleep, soothed headaches and brought a steadier sense of wellbeing. In 2001 she trained as a teacher and discovered just how wide the benefits of yoga can be. Her background is eclectic with strong roots in Iyengar for alignment and Vinyasa for flow. She is also influenced by meditation, massage, Pilates and personal training. Lisa believes yoga and mindfulness help us feel at home in our bodies, pay attention to what is happening within and build strength, mobility and focus for daily life. Classes are mindful and responsive to the time of day and who is in the room. You can expect both flowing and static postures with clear alignment cues, plus thoughtful options and modifications. All levels are welcome, and you will be encouraged to listen to your body and adjust for injuries, energy and mood. Mornings are more dynamic and breath led. Afternoons slow down with a playful mix of restorative shapes, pranayama and simple meditation so you finish the day calm and clear. What you will experience with Lisa: Alignment focused guidance with steady, accessible flow Options for every level and body Breathwork and mindfulness woven through each session Restorative practice, pranayama and quiet time in the afternoons

Lisa’s first experience of yoga was in early childhood, and as such, she does not recall much from those classes except smiling and just feeling really happy in them. Later on in adolescence, yoga taught her how using her breath she could dissolve the pains of cramping while running. In her early adulthood, she recognized its benefits in helping with insomnia, headaches, and an improved feeling of a balanced state of health and wellness when added to her exercise regime.
When Lisa fully immersed herself in training to be a yoga instructor in 2001, she learned that this was just the tip of the iceberg of the myriad of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of yoga. Her training and background is eclectic with a strong emphasis on Iyengar (alignment) and Vinyasa (flow) yoga. Additionally, her approach is influenced by her studies of meditation, massage, Pilates, and personal training. She believes the practice of yoga and mindfulness can help people to be more comfortable in their own skin, more aware of what is going on within themselves, in addition to helping them to be stronger, more mobile, and more focused in their specific intentions in this world.
Lisa’s classes emphasize mindfulness, and depending on the time of day and needs of the students, will incorporate flowing postures, static postures, and detailed alignment instructions. Her classes are suitable for all levels and alternatives and modifications will be given as needed. Students will be encouraged to listen to their bodies and to adjust their practice based on experience, injuries, energy levels, and psychological needs. The morning class at Ulpotha will be more dynamic while the afternoon class will be a playful mix of restorative yoga, pranayama and meditation.
